Do you have any band instruments you are either interested in donating to the school or selling to a family of a new band student? If so, please contact Elementary Instrumental Music Teacher Miss Swaciak at 659-8317, extension 1113, or email.   Miss Swaciak would be glad to discuss options for you to donate or sell your instrument. Every instrument that is donated, once checked for playing condition, is lent to students who could not otherwise afford to participate in the instrumental music program.

LESSON REMINDER

This year, the band lesson schedule is based on the days of the week. Whichever day your child has a band lesson, it will be on that day every week. Please remind your child to bring his or her instrument, lesson materials, and signed practice sheet on that day every week.

PRACTICING GUIDELINES AND EXPECTATIONS

As with any skill, your child will not improve on his/her instrument without regular practice. With that in mind, your child is expected to practice, at minimum, 20 minutes a day, 6 days a week, for a total of 120 minutes. The practice sheet your child received in his/her lesson has a grid for practice time to be recorded in. Please sign this sheet every week, and feel free to communicate with me via the “Parent Comment” portion of the sheet. Here are some suggestions to help your child effectively practice:

Establish a daily routine. Regardless of what time of day works best, establish one time every day that is specifically for practicing.

Try to spend part or all of your child's practice time with them. Your child will appreciate your interest, you will be able to hold them accountable to what they are supposed to be practicing, and you will have spent quality time with your child learning new musical skills.

Work with your child. If you have a musical background, use it and help your child discover the joys of music you already know. If you do not have a musical background, be supportive and learn with them!

Success in instrumental music will occur when all three parties involved (student, parents, and teacher) work together. With that in mind, here are expectations for all three stakeholders:

What I expect of students:
1) To practice regularly
2) To come to lessons and band rehearsals prepared
3) To give their best effort at the things I show them how to do and practice

What students need from their parents:
1) Constant support and encouragement
2) Accountability to practice time requirements
3) Help in remembering important concert dates and when to bring instrument to school

What students and their parents can expect of me:
1) Provide the student with the skills necessary to learn to play and enjoy their instrument
2) Availability to discuss any concerns or needs
3) Feedback throughout the course of the year on the student's progress on their instrument

Working together, I am confident that your child will have a positive and successful experience in the Kendall Elementary Band Program. Happy practicing!
