H1N1 (swine) Flu Information
The Kendall Central School District will post updates about the H1N1 flu on this page of the Web site. Kendall continues to follow guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the NYS Departments of Health and Education regarding the important of preventative measures, including good hygiene. Washing hands with soap and water is the preferred method for hand hygiene. However, these agencies recommend the use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers for children when traditional soap and water hand washing is not available or feasible. Please take time to educate your children to wash their hands with soap and water for 20 to 30 seconds (sing "Happy Birthday" twice) before eating, after toileting, or sneezing or coughing into their hands, whenever they are dirty, and before and after using the computer. When soap and water are not available, please be advised that the district will offer students the use of an alcohol-based hand sanitizer product. Supervised use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers is considered safe for school aged children; however, specific health hazards listed for the product may include: Eye Contact: May cause eye irritation. Skin Contact: No irritation or reaction expected. Inhalation: Not applicable. Ingestion: May cause upset stomach, nausea (Abnormal entry route). Carcinogenicity: Not listed as a carcinogen by NTP, IARC, OSHA or ACGIH. Please educate your children to use a small dime sized dollop of hand sanitizer, to rub all over every part of their hands in a washing motion until the gel is dry, and not to touch their faces, eyes, nose, or mouth while their hands are wet. If you do not wish to allow your child to participate in any hand sanitizing other than soap and water, the district recommends that you so educate your child, and please notify the school nurse.
