At some point in time, you may receive a letter that states that your child will be receiving Academic Intervention Services (AIS). New York State mandates that school districts provide extra help to any students who may not meet state standards. One way that New York State measures “meeting state standards” is through testing in the areas of English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics. This state testing begins in third grade. If teachers think that your child may not be able to pass the state ELA and/or math exam, or if your child is not within grade level range on literacy level testing, extra help will be provided. This extra help or practice may only last a short time, or it could last all year, depending on your child's needs.

Academic Intervention Services (AIS) are the lowest level of intervention services provided and are not considered special education services and have nothing to do with 504 plans or Individual Educational Plans (IEP). Many times AIS consists of extra practice with new skills or concepts, something that teachers have been doing all along. The difference is that now New York State requires that the school inform parents that this is occurring. If you have any further questions, please contact your child's teacher.
