SELECTIVE SERVICE
One of the most important responsibilities a young man must fulfill as he enters adulthood is to register with Selective Service. Under federal law, virtually all men must register with Selective Service within 30 days of their 18th birthday. Men who fail to register become ineligible for important opportunities that can impact their entire lives, such as student loans, job training and government jobs.

  Counseling Office News

Attention Sophomore Students: This year the counseling office is offering students the opportunity to take the practice ACT test. This is similar to the PSAT you will take as juniors. This test is called PLAN. The PLAN will be offered here at Kendall High School on February 11th at 8:00 a.m. The cost of PLAN is $11.25. Mrs. Hammer and Mrs. Bauer will be in your classrooms in the next few weeks to present all of the information about this test. In the meantime, please refer to the Kendall Counseling website for a full description of PLAN. Please contact the counseling at 659-8649 with any questions.

Dear Parent/Guardian(s),
As a parent of a 10th grader, now is a critical time to talk with your son or daughter about the future. PLAN can provide both of you with information that helps your decision-making process. PLAN is an educational assessment that students will have the opportunity to take in 10th grade. PLAN consists of four multiple choice tests: English, Math, Science and Reading Comprehension. PLAN can be seen as a practice test for the ACT. The ACT is a standardized test similar to the SAT that is used for admission to college and scholarship opportunities. {read more}

A letter from the Counseling Office to our Seniors and Parents:
Welcome to your senior year! This is a very exciting and important time in your life. You will be making many big decisions regarding college, employment and/or the military. We are looking forward to helping you in any way that we can. In order to do so, we need to take care of some of housekeeping items. Most of you will be filling out applications of some sort and in order for the counseling office to send the required documents; we will need parent and student permission. These documents may include, but are not limited to; ACT, SAT, AP scores, transcripts, letters of recommendation and information requested by newspapers about our graduating seniors. Students will be provided with this form and there will be copies available online and in the counseling office. Please understand that we cannot process any applications until we have a form on file for each student.

If you have any questions, please call the counseling office at 659-8649.

COLLEGE TESTING SCHEDULE Most 2 and 4-year colleges and some scholarship programs (ROTC Scholarships for example), require the results of a College Entrance Examination be sent to them. Admissions officers and scholarship program officials use the test scores, together with your high school record and other criteria, to assess your ability to do the work required in a post-high school training program.

The most popular college entrance tests are:
1. The College Boards Scholastic Test (SAT)
2. The American College Test (ACT)
3. In addition, some colleges (the more selective ones) require the applicants to take the College Boards Achievement Tests (SAT II).

To decide if you should take a test, and which one and when, you must know the test requirements of post-high schools and the scholarship programs in which you are interested.

Students at KCS who are planning to continue their education after graduation will have the opportunity to take college entrance exams during the school year. **Students are encouraged to register online at www.collegeboard.com and or www.ACTSTUDENT.org. If you need any further assistance please contact the Counseling Office.

Attention Juniors & Seniors: Any student who is planning to take SAT and need testing modifications should stop in the Counseling Office to obtain further details. SAT accommodations should be requested no later than three months prior to the exam date. If you wait until the last minute you might not be able to receive your testing modifications.

SCHOLARSHIPS: Many colleges, civic organizations and professional groups offer scholarship opportunities to high school seniors. Varied scholarship information arrives weekly at the High School Counseling Office for students' consideration. Many scholarship criteria are very specific; the student and parent need to examine closely to see if the student qualifies for application. KCS seniors have been actively exploring the scholarship file maintained in the Counseling Office. For more information, or if you would like to look through the scholarship file, please call the Counseling Office at 659-8649 or log onto our website www.kendallschools.org/highschool/counseling/scholarships.html
